The wars we fight today echo wars fought centuries ago — not because we lack the records, but because the records lost their weight. A book on a shelf is not the same as a lesson in a nervous system. A fact in a database is not the same as a conviction in a culture. The distance between “knowing” and “feeling the consequence of knowing” is the space where drift happens.
This is the central claim of The Drift Thesis: humanity does not have a knowledge problem. It has a context decay problem. Information exists. Understanding erodes. And in the gap between information and understanding, history finds room to repeat itself.
Déjà vu — that uncanny feeling of having lived a moment before — is not a neurological glitch. It is the human nervous system detecting a pattern it has already encountered, stripped of its original context. It is your brain catching the drift in real time.
Consider the structure of how knowledge moves through time. A scientist discovers a principle. She writes it down. Her students read it. Their students summarize it. Their students reduce it to a bullet point. Within four generations, the principle has been compressed into a slogan, and the slogan has been stripped of the reasoning that gave it power. The knowledge still “exists.” But it no longer operates.
This is not a metaphor. This is measurable. In machine learning, we call it catastrophic forgetting — when a neural network, trained on new data, loses its grip on old data. In cognitive science, we call it the Ebbinghaus forgetting curve — the exponential decay of memory without reinforcement. In philosophy, we call it the human condition.
But what if we stopped accepting it?

When we say an AI “hallucinates,” we mean it generates something that sounds true but isn’t — a confident fabrication built from pattern-matching without grounding. We treat this as a flaw in the machine. But the machine learned this behavior from us.
Every culture hallucinates. Every institution hallucinates. Every individual hallucinates. We fill gaps in our understanding with plausible narratives, and then we act on those narratives as though they were verified. The stock market hallucinates. Political campaigns hallucinate.
